Music brings people together. Paisley Road was excited to see Buffy Ste. Marie’s song about the importance of the environment on the CBC list of songs for the contest. This song built on the connection that Paisley and St Joseph’s have developed over the past 3 years and was a chance to foster a new relationship with Lloyd S. King (LSK). Over the course of two months, the three schools prepared their choirs and instrumentalists so the groups would be ready to perform together. We used video conferencing and communicated weekly about our plans for the big day! We met together at Paisley Road in late October. With the help and guidance of Dan and Mary-Lou Smoke, the group learned about the importance of environmental stewardship and the intention of Buffy Ste Marie’s Cradleboard project. Community members and Elders who came to visit were moved by the power of the group’s music. After the last take, when the multiple music teachers laughed and cheered, the students witnessed first hand what they were able to achieve by working together! I believe that our song is a tangible sign of reconciliation and understanding of one another's cultures and world views. Caring for the environment was our common link, and coming together in song is something they will never forget!
